From 1 August 2017, new nursing students will no longer receive NHS bursaries. Instead, they will have access to the same student loans system as other students.
For courses starting:
- on or before 31 July 2017 you can still apply for an NHS bursary
- on or after 1 August 2017, you will have access to the same student loans system as other students.

Help for Students in a Crisis – Cavell Nurses’ Trust is able to assist student nurses on recognised training courses – in exceptional circumstances such as sudden ill health or in a crisis situation. Cavell Nurses’ Trust cannot ‘top up’ NHS nursing bursaries, usual student expenses or pay for study fees.
To receive assistance, student nurses:
- Must be residing in the United Kingdom.
- Must have less than £4000.00 in savings.
- Must be in need.
Practice Placement Expenses (PPE) / Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses (TDAE) – students studying Nursing may be able to reclaim accommodation and travel costs associated with the undertaking of their placement. For more information click here.
